The Honda CR-V is a compact SUV known for its practicality and reliability. How long can a Honda CR-V last?

Honda has a reputation for engineering and producing durable, long-lasting vehicles, and the CR-V is no exception. It's a solidly built SUV with strong mechanical components.

To keep up with regular care, Honda uses a Maintenance Minder to remind owners when certain maintenance items need to be done. With proper care, the Honda CR-V can last for well over 200,000 miles or more. However, there are many factors that contribute to the longevity of the Honda CR-V and some model years fared better than others.

What years of the Honda CR-V are the most reliable?

In our experience, the 2012-2016 CR-V is the most reliable recent generation.

The 2004-2006 CR-Vs were good, but there are not that many of them left. The 2007-2011 Honda CR-V had some issues with the air conditioning, but otherwise is very reliable. The 2017+ model years are good, but the smaller turbocharged 1.5-liter engine is more picky in terms of maintenance. In general, non-turbo engines last longer than turbocharged engines.
Let's look at the factors that contribute to the longevity of the Honda CR-V:

Regular Maintenance and Care:

Honda uses a Maintenance Minder that displays maintenance items that are due on the instrument cluster. These items include oil changes, tire rotations, brake services and inspections, transmission and other fluid changes, spark plug replacement and valve adjustments. Following the Maintenance Minder schedule helps in keeping the vehicle in good shape.

Besides the Maintenance Minder items, we recommend checking the engine oil level regularly and topping it up if needed. This is because at higher mileage any engine consumes more oil between oil changes. Read more: How to check the oil level in your engine and read the dipstick.
Checking and adjusting the wheel alignment will help tires and suspension components last longer. Read also: When should the wheel alignment be done?

From experience, we also know that the timing chain and the tensioner with related components will likely need replacement sometime after 150,000 miles. Read more: When does the timing chain need to be replaced? Some brake and suspension work may also be required.

Driving Habits:

Driving habits and conditions play a role in the longevity of any vehicle. A more gentle driving style can contribute to the long-term reliability of the vehicle: Avoid aggressive acceleration, driving fast over bumps, excessive towing or carrying loads beyond capacity. This can help preserve the vehicle's mechanical components longer.

Rust Protection and Corrosion Prevention:

Rust and corrosion can significantly impact the lifespan of a vehicle, particularly in regions where salt is used on the roads in the winter months. Owners can protect their Honda CR-V exterior by regularly washing and applying a quality car wax. Rustproofing will help preserve underneath body and chassis components.
