Summer is here and if you need a car, why not consider a convertible? We selected ten choices for a convertible priced between $7,500 and $10,000 that you actually can find for sale. As we did our research, there were quite a few other deserving convertibles worthy, but very few were actually available for sale within this price range.
2001-2005 Ford Mustang Convertible
The iconic Mustang is widely available in a convertible configuration for under $10,000. The rear-wheel drive Mustang is fast and fun to drive, but don’t expect it to be cheap on gas. The EPA rates the 2004 V6 Mustang with an automatic at 17/25 MPG.
Rated close to or above average for dependability, the Mustang is a worthy choice. Ford Mustang comes with a V6 or V8 and manual or automatic transmission; the V6 automatic is the most commonly found model. The 2005 redesign gave the Mustang a much fresher look.
Chevrolet Camaro Convertible 1996-2002
This legendary car has plenty of shortcomings, but driving it is like going back in time. There are quite a few of them available as a convertible for under $10,000. Of course, the Camaro will need some repairs here and there and you won’t be saving on gas either, but if you like it for what it is, why not? The Chevrolet Camaro has rear-wheel drive and is available with a V6 or V8 engine. The 2001 V8 Camaro with an automatic transmission is rated at 16/24 MPG.
2000-2004 Toyota Solara Convertible
The Solara is a front-wheel drive Camry turned into a two-door convertible. Not as commonly-available as Ford Mustang, the Solara is very reliable; however you won’t find it with a manual transmission. The EPA rates the 2002 3.0L V6 Solara convertible at 17/24 MPG. The Solara offers a nice comfortable cabin and smooth and quiet ride. The Solara was redesigned for 2004.
1999-2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata
This little rear-wheel drive roadster is very nimble and responsive and driving it is a lot of fun. Most Miatas we found advertised under for $10,000 have a manual transmission. The 2003 MX-5 Miata with a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine and a manual transmission is rated at 20/26 MPG, although it runs on premium gasoline. With a good reputation for reliability, the MX-5 Miata is one of the top choices.
1995-2003 Mercedes-Benz (Various models)
Even though it won’t be cheap to keep this German Engineering marvel on the road, it’s a solid, classy ride. As we checked, there are a few hundred of them available for sale under $10,000 throughout the US. If you happen to come across one that is in a good shape and you are ready to spend money to keep it on the road, it drives beautifully. All convertible Mercedes-Benz models have rear wheel drive.
BMW 3-Series Convertible 1996-2002
Similar to Mercedes-Benz, BMW will not be cheap to maintain, but there are a few hundred available throughout the US for under 10K. BMW is a classy German rear-wheel drive car with excellent handling and strong engine. It’s available with a manual or automatic transmission. The 2001 BMW 325Ci with an automatic transmission is rated at 17/24 MPG.
Chrysler Sebring Convertible 2005-2008
We haven’t included earlier Sebring Convertible models because they were poorly rated for reliability, mostly because of the engine problems. The 2005 and newer models are improved, but still not better than average in terms of reliability. However, the Sebring is a gorgeous-looking car with a well-designed interior and a nice ride. All in all, if you know its flaws and can have it inspected properly before buying, it’s worth to check it out. The 2005 V6 Chrysler Sebring Convertible with automatic is rated at 19/25 MPG.
Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible 2003-2006
If you search for a convertible for under $10,000, this fancy-looking “Bug” will come up pretty often. Available in various bright colors, it is an eye catcher and it holds the road exceptionally well. The Beetle is even available with a turbocharged engine that makes it fly from 0 to 60 in under 8 seconds. However, the reliability is not better than average and the Beetle will likely need some repairs now and then. The 2004 Beetle Convertible with a 2.0L engine and an automatic transmission is rated at 19/28 MPG.
Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible 2005-2008
Another way to be original: the beautifully-styled PT Cruiser Convertible that looks like nothing else on the road. The 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser is also available with a 180-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. However, the retro style is its main selling point; mechanically the PT Cruiser is also not perfect and the non-turbo engine is not very strong. The 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser with a turbocharged 2.4L engine and automatic transmission is rated at 17/24MPG.
Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder 2000-2005
The Eclipse Spyder uses front-wheel drive and is available with a 210-hp 3.0L V6 or 142-hp 2.4L 4-cylinder engine. Most of the used models we found for sale have an automatic transmission. The Spyder is not really a race car, but will fit as a two-seat convertible cruiser. Overal, it’s a pretty decent vehicle without too many problems. The EPA rates the 2003 Eclipse Spyder V6 automatic at 18/25 MPG.
